In this Nazi propaganda film, the Titanic embarks on its inevitable collision course with history. In the wake of the over-spending required to build the largest luxury ship in the world, White Star Line executive Sir Bruce Ismay schemes to reverse the direction of his company's plummeting stock value. On board the Titanic, brave German 1st Officer Petersen struggles to convince his self-important British superiors not to overexert the ship's engines. Based on one of the great maritime disasters of the 20th century: The sinking of the "Titanic" in April 1912, in which 1,514 of the approximately 2,200 passengers died. After its completion in 1943, the disaster film with its clear anti-British tendencies was banned from being shown in the German Reich, as the war situation had already changed massively to the disadvantage of Nazi Germany. The actual director of the film, Herbert Selpin, was unable to finish the movie. After he was denounced and arrested for making jokes about the Wehrmacht, he was found hanged in his cell the next day. The film was then completed by Werner Klingler.
