Inspektor Thomas Charles Brackenreid se vydává na vlastní pěst mimo torontský rajón, aniž by komukoliv cokoliv řekl, včetně své ženy i syna, Čtvrtý okrsek nevyjímaje. Brackenreid se v civilu vrací zpátky na „místo činu“, do městečka Saint Marys, kde začínal vykonávat policejní službu. Ačkoli se účel mysteriózní návštěvy ponese v duchu kriminální podstaty, Brackenreid zde bude vystaven šokující zprávě, která nesmazatelně otřese jeho rodinným životem. Aby toho nebylo málo, v patách má nakonec také svého syna Johna, a jelikož jablko nepadá daleko od stromu, Čtvrtý okrsek nemá nejmenšího tucha, kam se to mladý konstábl vlastně poděl.
