Čtvrtý okrsek se rozpadá. Po sváru plynoucím ze ztráty dítěte dochází u koronerky Ogdenové a detektiva Murdocha k rozdělení. Murdoch se na vlastní pěst pouští do pátrání, které se nakonec smrtonosně obrací proti němu, lékařka Ogdenová mezitím zvažuje odchod z práce i z celého Toronta. Rovněž před konstáblem Crabtreem stojí nemilosrdné životní rozhodnutí, jež si vybere svou daň. Do toho všeho se musí detektiv Watts bez účasti Murdocha a Ogdenové vypořádat s neznámým řezníkem, který za sebou zanechává v městských řekách jen torza rozčtvrcených těl.
