Doktor Charlie Harris pracuje so svojou snúbenicou a taktiež doktorkou Alex Reidovou v nemocnici Hope Zion v Toronte. Sú zamilovaní a večer sa majú brať. Lenže osud to chcel inak - do ich taxíka narazí iné auto. Obaja pomôžu zraneným, ale Charlie následne upadne do kómy. Alex robí všetko čo môže, aby Charlieho zachránila. Jeho duch sa však dostal mimo svojho tela, a tak teraz blúdi po chodbách nemocnice. Dr. Joel Goran, nová chirurgická posila Hope Zion a bývalý priateľ Alex, sa ocitne pri nehode autobusu. Do nemocnice tak nastúpi o deň skôr, pretože tam príde spolu so záchranármi. A keď je Dr. Harris v kóme, preberá Joel jeho pacientov. Medzi nimi aj bývalého vojaka Shawna Pricea, ktorý má na ruke nádor a má mu byť amputovaná celá ruka. Alex sa medzitým snaží prísť na iné myšlienky prácou, preto sa venuje mladej Angele, ktorá do nemocnice prišla s bolesťami brucha, avšak nakoniec porodí chlapčeka... (TV Markíza)
